As a work around you can download the latest definitions manually from the Symantec site at the following url:

Did you try the following instructions from Symantec:

Igot It towork finally after toiling on this for a week!You need to configure Windows Firewall in XPand Internet Worm Protection in Systemsworks Live Update needs to use port 21 for FTP and 80 in HTTP and 443 in HTTPS. Ialso had to delete all my dial-up connections in Internet Options in the Control Pqanel as Iuse DSL anyways, Igot it to work TWICE to ensure me it was not a fluke occurrance

The above REALLY WORKS. The article from Symantec Tech Support abou adjusting the configuration and clearing out all the useless dialup connections really did the trick!Try it, It works!

I had a similar problem with Symantec. The error message said: "Live update could not retrieve the catalog file..."

The above fix did not work for me. What did work is this:

1. On the computer on which you see this error message, look in the C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate folder for the S32luhl1.dll file.
If the file exists, then delete it.
2. Delete the Settings.LiveUpdate file. The location of the Settings.LiveUpdate file varies according to the operating system:
* For Windows 95/98: C:\Windows\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate
* For Windows NT 4: C:\WinNT\\Profiles\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate
* For Windows 2000 and XP: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Symantec\LiveUpdate

Note: You must delete the S32luhl1.dll file before deleting the Settings.LiveUpdate file.

Hope this helps you.

Thanks stiner905, it was driving me nuts that this thing would not work properly on one machien but fine on all the others. Your instructions worked perfectly. Much appreciated.

i have a question for stiner905.
i followed your instructions, to get my liveupdate to work. and the only trouble i had, is that when i get to the liveupdate folder, i can't figure out if i am to delete ALL of the settings that i have in there, or just ONE of them. i don't have a file that is called Settings.Liveupdate. i have about 29 settings in there.
i have already deleted the S32luhl1.dll file. i just wish the Settings.LiveUpdate file, was as easy to find as that one was.

can you tell me if i should have all those settings for liveupdate, which includes anything from product inventories, to logs, etc.?
thank you for any help you can give me.

Iv'e just solved the same problem  by upgrading live update to a newer version (after trying all of the below and failing).
After upgrading , when I opened Live Update it found about 15 files which it told me would stop Live Update from running and deleted them.
